Prefabricated Fireplace
The wood burning prefabricated fireplace has definitely increased in popularity. They provide an affordable option for adding a fireplace to your home. This is the type of fireplace most commonly used by builders and homeowners.
They are constructed of metal with a fire-resistant barrier on the interior of the firebox and have a metal chimney pipe. Kits are available for providing outdoor air for combustion which increases efficiency by not wasting indoor air up the chimney.

You can select either a radiant or a heat-circulating design. In the heat-circulating, a small fan draws in cool room air and circulates it around the firebox to heat it and then blows it back out into the room. A radiant type of fireplace transfers heat by radiation out into the room. The picture to the right is an example of a wood burning metal prefabricated fireplace with vented gas logs installed.
Gas logs (natural gas or propane) can be installed in prefabricated fireplaces. Although some of them cannot handle vent-less gas logs, so check with the manufacturer.
